Is SAP A Good Career?

I believe I am suitable to answer the question “Is SAP A Good Career”. Reason being prior to 2010 I was working in Non-SAP Technologies. I was working in the Microsoft Dot Net Tech Stack and the offer letter from SAP Labs, Bangalore gave me goosebumps. When I was in SAP I got opportunities to work in multiple SAP Technologies and Frameworks like SAPUi5, Business By Design(ByD), SAP CRM and so on.

Before Discussing more Is SAP A Good Career, I want to give a brief walkthrough of SAP. If you already know what is SAP and the various modules and technologies you can skip the next section.

What Is SAP?

The most widely used ERP system nowadays is SAP. SAP-skilled employees are in high demand and difficult to find. The SAP ERP software offers the candidate the benefit of high compensation and outstanding career progression compared to other IT professionals’ professions due to the dearth of skilled and experienced SAP experts. The firm is primarily looking for software that best satisfies its needs in terms of the product cost, productivity improvement, and efficiency boost. SAP products are made in a way that better satisfies all business requirements. The enterprises adopting SAP are seeing improved ROI, or return on investment, and are typically Fortune 500 companies or significant global corporations. These businesses provide their consultants with substantial compensation packages.

Around 425,000 customers are served by SAP, a software business with headquarters in Germany. Due of SAP’s rapid business expansion, businesses are drawn to this ERP software. The demand for SAP-skilled employees is rising daily as a result of SAP’s expanding market dominance and the fantastic job prospects it is generating.

Most Popular SAP Courses

Some of the most popular and trending SAP Courses

SAP MM and SAP SD the demand is slightly lesser due to increasing supply in the market. I would not recommend you to take up these courses unless you come from the core industry related to it.

Industry Experience Or Qualification needed for SAP Module

Every aspect of the industry is covered by a number of SAP modules. Due to a lack of expertise and insufficient experience, communication between SAP end users and SAP consultants frequently becomes complicated and time-consuming. Therefore, while deciding which SAP module to use, the educational component is crucial. Let’s examine several SAP modules and the corresponding career pathways in them.

Best SAP Courses For Finance

If you are from Finance Background then SAP FI & SAP CO is the best SAP Courses For Finance. I have worked with many such consultants who have been highly successful in SAP FICO.

SAP For Mechanical Engineers

Another famous question would be what are the best SAP Courses for Mechanical Engineers. The following SAP Modules would be logical choices for a mechanical engineer:

  1. SAP PP (Production Planning)
  2. SAP PM (Plant Maintenance)
  3. SAP MM (Materials Management)

It also depends on the interest of an individual on what SAP Module to be picked up. It is not a rule written on book that a Mechanical Engineer should not do a course on SAP TM or SAP EWM.

Why Most Candidates Choose SAP Training?

  • Many core jobs in manufacturing industries (chemical plants, auto manufacturers, steel plants, etc.) can be extremely physically taxing, mentally draining, and under extreme pressure to keep the machines functioning. The engineers that entered core fields are now, after a few years (or many years), thinking about alternative solutions when they notice that pals are having the coolest jobs as techies (which, of course, is not the case).
  • Assuming a higher package than their current job and salary.
  • Good work life balance.
  • Company sponsored travel to International Locations.
  • Loads of money.
  • At any stage, it’s simple to join SAP; all you need to do is obtain a certificate.

Truth About Is SAP A Good Career

  • If you are somebody new to the core industry then you can consider switching to SAP, or else you might be doing a mistake. You will be treated like a Fresher in the initial 2 or 3 years. You will be even paid less. I get many CVs who are experts in the core industry(10+ years of experience), but they are willing to work for free or on a stipend just to get SAP experience. Unless you have this mindset you cannot make a mark in your SAP Career.
  • Do not assume that as soon as you join you can get a higher salary. I know a friend who was a medical representative and easily made 100,000 INR a month and did a course on SAP Material Management(MM) and could not find a job as he was not willing to come down on his salary. There are many such cases.
  • Good work-life balance is a myth in any job or industry if the Project Manager messes up the planning. Most companies or managers over-commit to their clients in turn hurting the deadlines. Due to this, the SAP Consultants end up burning out by working late nights or weekends. Especially if you are new to SAP Consulting then Go-Live or Support projects will exhaust you.
  • Company-sponsored travel to International locations sounds good. If you are looking to settle down in Europe or USA then SAP Consulting could be the key. But there is a catch, you will not be paid as high as a local consultant. For instance, an SAP Transportation Management Consultant in Europe might make 45,000 Euros or more annually after all taxes, but a consultant who moved from India to Europe might make only 25,000 to 30,000 Euros annually after all taxes. However, this figure will normalize once you have the citizenship of that nation and you switch jobs.

My final verdict would be, though the SAP Career might sound lucrative, there are a couple of sacrifices you would have to make if you are a senior. I would not recommend a senior resource to do a switch to SAP unless you are mentally prepared. If you are a fresher to mid-junior then SAP switch would definitely help you on the long run.
